Best restaurant in Maui

No trip to Maui is complete without a visit to celebrity Chef Beverly Gannon’s Haliimaile General Store. The charming up country eatery dishes out some of the best food in the islands. And yes, it was once really a general store serving that area just below Haleakala.

Then 30-years-ago, Beverly, a young, enterprising, talented and uber-creative chef converted the property into a chic but casual eatery. Locals flocked in droves. Then came tourists, rock stars and celebrities. Today, Haliimaile is one of the most popular restaurants on Maui.

Everything about Haliimaile speaks perfection

I must confess that my husband Richard and I are friends of owners Joe and Beverly Gannon. But that does not in any way sway our judgment as the food, time after time is heavenly. Our most recent meal was so good that we oohed and aahed audibly.

For starters we dug into heavenly Hawaiian Ahi Cakes followed by radish herb salad with tangy wasabi ginger tartar sauce. From there it was a serving of Kalua pork and  crispy goat cheese wontons served with mango BBQ dipping sauce.

There was no stopping our hostess Beverly who then ordered us tasty Togarashi Shishito Peppers—simply sensational blistered semi-spicy peppers tossed with togarashi and kabayaki sauce.

We also  had offerings from the raw bar.  First up was a sashimi Napoleon—did I say ‘heavenly’ this dish rocks your taste buds with layers of ahi tartar,  smoked salmon, sashimi ahi, crispy wonton stack, and a  wasabi vinaigrette. And my favorite, poke.

When you dine with the chef, the courses never stop.  So there was a refreshing and delicious raspberry-infused watermelon salad with feta cheese, roasted pistachios, Kalamata olives, micro argugula, sprinkled with raspberry white balsamic vinaigrette.  Then came a whole  Opakapaka—we have eaten this island fish often, but it was rarely served like this, or this tasty. And passed around the table, a Meyer lemon marinated half-chicken—she know her way around a bird.  Was Beverly trying to fatten us up.

I think so because for t he grand finale she ordered a rich chocolate and caramel dessert to diet for.

 

Although it can take you anywhere from a half hour to an hour depending on what part of Maui you’re staying in, a trip to this eating emporium is worth the scenic drive. Actually plan to go for lunch and explore the air in the daylight. Or if you opt for dinner, leave early. They also have a fun happy hour with creative cocktails, beer and wine.
