There’s nothing like a holiday cruise aboard the Crystal Serenity

Crystal Cruises goes overboard adorning its ships for the Christmas holidays. The mood is always festive. And, when the master of the ship is Captain Birger Vorland, it’s even more enjoyable.
Meet the Master of the ship
I discovered that Captain Vorland is almost our neighbor. He lives just down the Hollywood Hills from us in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley. He and I talked abut meeting at Dupars in Studio City when and if he’s ever off the ship. However that iconic, celebrity-driven coffee shop has since closed.
I also learned that Capt. Vorland was raised on a small island in Norway called Bemio, south of Begen where he spent his youth around ships. He became a seaman at the age of 19 on a cargo ship sailing the North Sea. In 1983, after serving in the military, he joined his first luxury passenger ship.
It was quite a change, But he said he adjusted well. Then in 2003 he joined Crystal Cruises as master of its first ship Crystal Harmony on which he remained until she left the fleet in 2005. From there he went to work in the company’s corporate offices in Los Angeles as vice president of nautical operations until returning to the sea in 2012 on Serenity on which he navigated us and 1,000 others through the through the Caribbean from New Orleans to Miami.
It’s not to early to book a Christmas cruise. They sell out fast. Especially on Crystal. The mood is almost magical. Carols are played and sung by musicians around the ship and Christmas decorations deck the halls and public rooms.
