While the no sail rule still applies in the US, some European cruise line are back at sea. Unfortunately two of them are reporting Covid19 infections.  One outbreak is on  Norwegian company Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen. The other is on  Carnival’s Italian subsidiary’s  Costa’s Costa Crociere.

According to Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam five passengers and 36 crew from the Amundsen tested positive. They are now in  University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsoe, north of the Arctic Circle. He says that 33 of the crew members are from the Philippines and the rest are Norwegian, German or French.

Gaps in protocols cited

Skjeldam acknowledges gaps in coronavirus protocols aboard Amundsen and promises a full review of all procedures and their handling. He says that the origins of the outbreak are unclear as guests came from all over the world.

The ship’s itinerary to numerous ports along Norway’s western coast may have exposed them to the virus. The seven-day voyages sailed from Bergen, Norway to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard July !7 and 26. All passengers who sailed on those voyages have been notified of the outbreak.

Costa reports that the three Crociere crew members to test positive for the virus came from two other ships at the port of Civitavecchia near Rome. Two were hospitalized and the third was put in isolation on the ship. All crew undergo coronavirus testing twice after arriving in Italy and then undergo  a two-week monitoring period.

Other ships sailing abroad

There are  currently  other cruise lines sailing in Europe now–one is AmaWaterways riverboat  AmaKristina, which is  now sailing Europe’s great rivers.  The other is German cruise ship Mein Schiff2  which is experimenting with an abbreviated itinerary without port calls.

Cruise lines that aren’t operating are using the time to implement very stringent protocols that will make it safer for passengers and crew.
