Popups and decoration transform Zurich into a fantasyland

By Patti Pietschmann, Travel Diva

You  may not be able to travel abroad right now. So we’re giving you a quick tour of Zurich which turns into veritable wonderland during the holidays. The city glows with  classic decorations and light installations, pop-ups and festive activities.

Christmas Island and other delights

One  highlight is the Bauschanzli Christmas Island, which sits  in the heart of Zurich. During the holidays mulled wine stands and food trucks satisfy thirst and hunger. There are also pop-up Raclette ‘Hüüsli’ huts offering a cozy setting for three-course menus of waffles, sausage and raclette–an indulgent dish of melted cheese.

The Winter Garte garden next to Zurich’s main train station offer lots of space to socially distance. A  wooden domed structure boasts  a bar, an atmospheric indoor area and a comfortable outdoor space for lingering.

The Park Hyatt Zurich hotel, located near the illuminated Bahnhofstrasse, turns into a festive venue with  Christmas trees and a miniature holiday market. There’s a special Christmas menu at the parkhuus Restaurant with dishes such as Swiss veal tartare and tangerine sorbet. And delights from  Pastry Chef Tilo Herber that include the Yule Log.

Hitting the ice

There are  open-air ice rinks (such as the Dolder, the first of its kind in Europe), several holiday markets and the famous Jelmoli Marlitram (Fairy Tale Tramway).Ice skating and more

Zurrich is prioritizing COVID-19-safety measures to ensure the 2020 holiday is both festive and safe. (More information on the city’s COVID-19 policies can be found here: https://www.zuerich.com/en/visit/situation-in-zurich).
