Michael Coghlan says happy crews create contented passengers

Michael Coghland hails from Canada but makes his land home in Southern California. The amiable chap retains his Canadian accent and his fondness for cool climes.
“I love sailing in Alaska, New England and Scandinavia,”he admits while we chat on board an RSSC Mariner Alaska cruise. Like myself, Michael also likes sailing back to Los Angeles where we are headed after embarking in Vancouver six days ago.
Michael’s wife and two young sons (ages 5 and 3) are also on the ship. They get to sail with him once a contract. His spouse of 11 years is popular Regent Seven Seas guest entertainer, Stephanie Baldwin, a classically-trained lyric soprano. “Passengers know her better than they know me,” Michael beams.
Eleven years with Regent Seven Seas
Employed by Regent for eleven years now, Michael sails on all four of the line’s vessels. He enjoys being back on Seven Seas Mariner where he oversees guest and crew services. And I must say does it well. This voyage is staffed with some of the friendliest finest crew afloat.
Michael has a varied, 40-year long hotel and seafaring career. He’s worked with Silversea, Cunard and Oceania. “I have worked in so many different capacities that it’ seems effortless for me to guide people in their duties and mentor them to ensure they have a successful career with us.”
He feels extremely fortunate to have seen the world during seven world cruises on Sagafjord with Cunard, ten years at Silversea and three years with Oceania before joining Regent Seven Seas in 2008 where he has had the pleasure to oversee three world cruises onboard Seven Seas Voyager.
Maintaining a happy crew
His main management philosophy is that having a happy and content crew results in pleased, satisfied guests. “I teach the crew to be civil and kind to each other which filters down to the guests,” he says.
Michael’s shore side enjoyment
Michael spends his vacations entertaining his family and friends and when not working on his house he may be found at his summer cottage on Lake Nipissing in Northern Ontario.
When off ships Michael likes to fish, and sometimes just relaxing on the beach taking in the spectacular sunsets.
