Luxury ship operator Silversea took home the trophy for Sustainability at the 2020 Seatrade confab yesterday. The prize recognizes participation in social and environmental practices. Another award was given in recognition for its pioneering Silversea Fund for the Galapagos. The fund is one of its many efforts for enriching the communities and landscapes visited by its ships.
Seatrade Cruise Awards forms part of the series of global Seatrade events, websites, and publications that covers all aspect of the cruise and maritime industries. Yearly confabs bring together key players in the industry for brainstorm sessions.
“Seatrade’s Sustainability Award is an important recognition of our efforts to protect the environment and wildlife of the Galapagos. Which we do through education and relationships with the local communities,” says Fernando Delgado, vice president and general manager of Silversea Cruises Ecuador.
“This award affirms our commitment to the long-term conservation of the natural wonders of the Galapagos Islands and all destinations,” adds Barbara Muckermann, Silversea’s Chief Marketing Officer.
Preserving the Galapagos
The Galapagos Conservancy is the only organization in the US that focuses exclusively on protecting the area’s unique ecosystems and biological integrity. The Silversea Fund for the Galapagos supports the archipelago’s local communities by financing projects related to youth empowerment; education and training; and science, technology and conservation.
The fund builds on Silversea’s existing efforts to make a positive impact on the natural and economic environment of the Galapagos Islands, and the Floreana Island Ecological Restoration Project.
