Luxury cruise operator opens fund for Galapagos preservation

By Patti Pietschmann Travel Diva

As most of us know the planet is in dire straits unless we take action. And that’s exactly what Silversea Cruises is doing. The luxury and expedition ship operator has set out to save at least a part of it–the precious Galapagos.

To do so it is raising money for a special fund.  What’s more Silversea says it will match all contributions in the form of a future cruise credit.

Partnership with Galapagos Conservancy

The Galapagos is one of the most popular destinations for tourism today. And while this helps its economy, it does little to protect the natural wonders of the area. Which is why this move by Silversea in partnership with Galapagos Conservancy comes at a good time.

The fund will help finance projects related to youth empowerment; education and training; and science, technology and conservation

Fernando Delgado, vice president and general manger of Silversea Ecuador explains that this  is a natural extension of the company’s  belief that sustainable tourism can open eyes and foster respect for our planet.

“We will use education as a means to sustain the long-term conservation of the environment, leveraging on our strong relationships with the region’s local people,” he adds.

Passengers traveling on Silver Galapagos (and  those aboard Silver Origin from July 2020) can donate to the reserve during their voyage. Donations of $500 and $1,000 per suite, donors will provide a matching credit for a future cruise

Elegance in expedition cruises

Silversea’s new, environment-friendly  Silver Origin, which debuts in July 2020, will be the most elegant vessel to sail the region. The all-suite, 100-guest  ship is also the first ship in Silversea’s fleet designed specifically for a given destination.

Silver Origin’s dynamic positioning system will help situate the ship over delicate seabed ecosystems to prevent the anchor from causing damage. She also will incorporate in-suite freshwater purification systems that convert seawater into drinking water,  drastically reducing the use of plastic on board.

Donations welcome
