About the Port
Darwin Bay sits within the flooded caldera of Genovesa Island, one of the most remote outposts in the Galápagos archipelago. Steep cliffs ring a sheltered bay lined with a pale coral-sand beach, and the island's isolation has made it a haven for seabirds rather than the giant tortoises and land iguanas found elsewhere in the islands. Frigatebirds, red-footed and Nazca boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls nest in open view, often within arm's reach of the trail.
Landing is by panga, with a wet landing onto the beach for those exploring the bay's edge and a separate landing near a rocky ascent known as Prince Philip's Steps for reaching the clifftop plateau above. Snorkeling in the calm, clear water often turns up hammerhead sharks and playful sea lions. Because Genovesa lies well north of the main island cluster, calls here are typically brief, making the walking trails and shoreline the focus of a visit.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Darwin Bay.
Climb Prince Philip's Steps
A steep rocky ascent from a separate panga landing leads to a clifftop plateau thick with nesting boobies and frigatebirds. Sturdy shoes and a bit of scrambling are required, but the seabird colonies at eye level make it worthwhile.
Walk the Darwin Bay Beach Trail
A gentle wet-landing trail winds along the coral-sand beach past swallow-tailed gulls and lounging sea lions, offering an easy alternative to the steps for close wildlife viewing.
Snorkel the Caldera Waters
The sheltered, clear bay is one of the archipelago's best snorkel spots, with regular sightings of hammerhead sharks, rays, and curious sea lions just off the beach.
