About the Port
Perched on windswept cliffs above the Sonoma Coast, Fort Ross preserves the reconstructed stockade of a Russian-American Company settlement established in 1812. Built originally to support the maritime fur trade and supply Russian outposts in Alaska, the fort once housed a diverse community of Russian settlers, Alaska Native hunters, and local Kashaya Pomo people. Wooden buildings, a reconstructed Russian Orthodox chapel, and blockhouses evoke this layered chapter of California history, set against dramatic Pacific views.
Today the site operates as a state historic park, with trails leading from the fort down to a small cove and along coastal bluffs.
