Herschel Island

A remote Arctic outpost off Yukon's coast where whaling history and Inuvialuit heritage meet the edge of the Northwest Passage

About the Port

Herschel Island, known to the Inuvialuit as Qikiqtaruk, sits just off the Yukon coast in the Beaufort Sea, marking the westernmost reach of Canada's Arctic islands. Once a base for nineteenth-century whaling fleets, the island preserves weathered wooden buildings and artifacts from that era alongside a much longer record of Inuvialuit habitation. Today it forms a territorial park managed with input from local communities, protecting fragile tundra and archaeological sites.

Visits here are inherently small-scale, with landings dependent on weather and ice conditions typical of this high-latitude region. Travelers going ashore can expect open, treeless terrain, historic structures interpreted by park rangers, and opportunities to spot Arctic wildlife such as musk oxen or seabirds. As one of the few accessible points along the western Northwest Passage, Herschel Island offers a rare, tangible connection to Arctic exploration and Indigenous history in a landscape that remains largely untouched by modern development.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Herschel Island.

Tour the Whaling Station Buildings

Weathered wooden structures from the 1890s whaling era still stand near the shore, guided by park rangers who explain their history. A short walk from the landing site makes this the island's centerpiece stop.

Walk the Open Tundra

Set out on ranger-led paths across the treeless landscape to spot Arctic wildflowers, musk oxen, or nesting seabirds. Wear sturdy waterproof boots, as ground conditions can be soft and uneven.

Learn Inuvialuit History On Site

Rangers and local interpreters share the island's much longer story of Inuvialuit habitation alongside the whaling-era artifacts, offering context found nowhere else on this remote stretch of coast.
