Herschel Island, known to the Inuvialuit as Qikiqtaruk, sits just off the Yukon coast in the Beaufort Sea, marking the westernmost reach of Canada's Arctic islands. Once a base for nineteenth-century whaling fleets, the island preserves weathered wooden buildings and artifacts from that era alongside a much longer record of Inuvialuit habitation.
