About the Port
On Cape Breton Island, Louisbourg centers on the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, the largest historical reconstruction in North America. Costumed interpreters, cobblestone streets, kitchen gardens, and restored homes recreate daily life within the French colonial stronghold, while original fortifications trace the outline of the 18th-century town and harbor defenses.
Visitors can watch a cannon firing, sample period fare, and explore workshops and merchant houses that once supported a bustling fishing and trading port. Nearby stands the site of Canada's first lighthouse, rebuilt in 1923 after earlier structures were lost. The fortress grounds are within a short walk of the pier, making it an easy, self-guided step back into New France's colonial era.
