About the Port
Fatu Hiva is among the most isolated islands in the Marquesas, and Omoa, its main village, sits along a dramatic coastline of steep green ridges and volcanic rock. Home to roughly 650 residents, the island has long been called the Island of Tapa for its enduring tradition of bark-cloth art, a craft largely vanished elsewhere in the Pacific. Villagers here still rely on fishing, coconut copra production, and cultivation of nono, a fruit valued for its medicinal properties.
Visits typically arrive by tender, with Omoa's small harbor serving as the gateway to the village and its handful of artisan workshops. Walking through town offers a chance to see tapa cloth made using time-honored methods and to meet local artists who continue the craft. Beyond the settlement, the island's rugged, deeply folded terrain and dense vegetation reflect the raw natural character that defines much of the Marquesas.

How our planners would spend a day in Omoa.
Watch Tapa Artisans at Work
Step into small family workshops in Omoa to see bark cloth pounded, dyed, and painted by hand using techniques passed down for generations. A short walk from the tender landing, it's a rare chance to meet the last practitioners of this near-vanished Pacific craft.
Hike the Omoa–Hanavave Trail
For those with strong legs and time to spare, the rugged ridge trail linking Omoa to Fatu Hiva's other village rewards with sweeping views of jagged peaks and jungle valleys. Best attempted only with a local guide and several hours to spare.
Wander the Volcanic Shoreline
Beyond the village, walk along black volcanic rock framed by steep, folded green ridges that show off the Marquesas' raw, untamed scenery. It's an easy stroll from the harbor and a good way to take in the island's dramatic backdrop.
