Puerto Caldera

A working Pacific port that opens the door to Costa Rica's cloud forests, rainforests, and capital city

About the Port

Set on the Gulf of Nicoya, Puerto Caldera is a modest working harbor rather than a resort town, valued chiefly as the Pacific gateway to Costa Rica's interior. From the pier, roads lead inland toward San José, roughly 80 kilometers away, and onward to Carara National Park, the beach town of Jacó, and Los Sueños. Travelers seeking wildlife and scenery use it as the launch point for excursions rather than a destination in itself.

Farther afield, the port serves as the practical jumping-off point for the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, established in 1972 and renowned for its biodiversity and long history of conservation research. Trips to the Arenal Volcano region are also commonly arranged from here. Given the driving distances involved, full-day excursions to these highland sites reward an early start from the pier.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Puerto Caldera.

Explore Carara National Park

A short drive from the pier, this transitional rainforest reserve shelters scarlet macaws, crocodiles, and dense tropical growth along accessible trails. Ideal for travelers short on time who still want genuine wildlife encounters.

Hike Monteverde Cloud Forest

Suspended walkways and misty trails wind through one of the world's most biodiverse reserves, home to quetzals and hundreds of orchid species. The drive from Puerto Caldera takes several hours, so an early departure is essential.

Day Trip to Arenal Volcano

Costa Rica's iconic conical volcano anchors a region of hot springs, hanging bridges, and lush foothills. Given the distance from port, this excursion suits an early start and a full day away from the ship.
