About the Port
Deception Island is an active volcano shaped like a horseshoe, its center flooded by the sea to form Port Foster, a sheltered caldera ringed by ash-streaked cliffs. Ships enter through Neptune's Bellows, a narrow break in the crater wall barely wide enough for passage, revealing black volcanic sand beaches, steaming vents, and the eerie remains of a former whaling station at Whalers Bay, where rusted boilers and collapsed buildings still stand.
Chinstrap penguins nest on the exposed slopes, and the surrounding waters draw seabirds and seals feeding along the shoreline. There is no pier, so landings are made by tender onto the beach itself. The island's stark geology, geothermal warmth beneath the sand, and layered human history make it one of the most visually striking and unusual stops in the South Shetland Islands.

Explore Whalers Bay Ruins
Wander among rusted try-pots, collapsed hangars, and a small cemetery left from the early-1900s whaling operation, now weathered by ash and wind. Landings are by tender directly onto the black sand beach, so allow time to walk the flat, open site.
Take the Polar Plunge
Feel geothermal heat rising through the volcanic sand at the shoreline, warm enough in patches to dig a shallow steaming pool before dashing into the frigid Southern Ocean. A signature Antarctic bragging-rights moment, weather and safety conditions permitting.
Climb to Neptune's Window
A short, steep hike up loose scoria leads to a gap in the crater rim with sweeping views over Port Foster and, on clear days, out to the open sea beyond. Sturdy waterproof boots and trekking poles make the ash slope easier going.
