About the Port
Scattered across roughly 100 square miles of the Caribbean Sea, the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) form one of Panama's most striking archipelagos, with hundreds of coral-fringed islets and cays lying just off the country's northeastern coast. Fewer than fifty are inhabited, largely by the Guna people, who govern this autonomous territory and have long worked to shield it from unchecked development, keeping much of the landscape unspoiled and quiet.
Visits here center on the islands' natural beauty and Guna craft traditions, particularly the vivid, hand-stitched mola textiles depicting birds, fish, and geometric patterns in bold color. Landing is typically by small boat or tender, with travelers ferried among islets rather than docking at a fixed pier. The pace stays unhurried, shaped by clear shallow water, white sand, and a culture that remains rooted in its own customs rather than tourism infrastructure.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in San Blas.
Snorkel the Coral Cays
Slip into warm, clear shallows around uninhabited islets to drift over coral gardens and sea stars. Boats shuttle small groups out for an hour or two—bring your own mask if you have one, as rental gear is limited.
Shop for Mola Textiles
Browse hand-stitched mola panels sold directly by Guna women, whose reverse-appliqué technique and bold motifs make each piece a wearable piece of local history. Bargaining is light; cash in small bills is best.
Visit a Guna Village
Step onto one of the inhabited islands to see thatched-roof homes and daily life largely unchanged by outside development. A local guide or village elder often explains Guna governance and customs—respectful photography usually requires a small fee.
