About the Port
Sir Bani Yas Island lies off the coast of Abu Dhabi's Western Region, a low desert isle transformed over recent decades into a wildlife reserve and nature preserve. Once used for grazing and salt production, the island now shelters free-roaming Arabian oryx, giraffes, gazelles, and other species across open savannah-style terrain, a legacy of conservation efforts begun under the late Sheikh Zayed. Mangrove channels fringe parts of the coastline, offering a quieter counterpoint to the desert interior.
Beyond its animal population, the island holds traces of much older history, including the remains of a Christian monastery believed to date back some 1,400 years, among the earliest such sites found in the Gulf region.
