ITINERARY

Ljubljana grew into a major center of commerce and culture when the Hapsburgs assumed control in 1278. Wander the quaint streets of Slovenia's capital city and in the old part see the 18th-century cathedral and 16th-century castle that dominate the skyline. After lunch, continue through glorious countryside to Lake Bled. Like a picture postcard, its emerald green water surrounds a tiny islet with a pretty church and a medieval castle perched on a rocky cliff. Visit Bled Castle for spectacular views of the lake and mountains and board a hand-propelled plenta (boat) to cross the lake to Bled Island. Dine independently this evening. Grand Hotel Union B L

Days 1-2: USA or Canada/Ljubljana, Slovenia
Enormous stalactites and stalagmites form extraordinary shapes in massive, cathedral-like caves. See them firsthand when you visit the famous Postojna Caves, regarded as one of the most spectacular cave formations in the world. Look for the endemic olm, the largest troglodytic amphibian in the world, resident of the pool in the cave - the only place where it can be found. After lunch continue to the famous stud farm in Lipica, renowned for its Lipizzaner horses and celebrated riding school. Enjoy a guided tour of the farm followed by a performance by these elegant horses and their skilled handlers. Then cross the border to Croatia, a crescent-shaped country bordering the Mediterranean, Central Europe and the Balkans. One of the most beautiful destinations in Europe, its dramatic Dalmatian coastline mirrors the recent whirlwind of events in the country's history from the breakdown of the former Yugoslavia, through the political and military turmoil of the 1990s, to its candidature for membership of the European Union. Head toward Opatija, once the most fashionable seaside resort of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its waterfront promenade affords stunning views of the coastline. Dine ? la carte at your hotel this evening. Hotel Mozart B L D
