Day 5: Florence
Travel by train to Rome. Known as "The Eternal City," Rome is Italy's largest city and one of the few places on earth where you come face-to-face with over 2,000 years of history at every turn. A visit to the Vatican includes the Sistine Chapel, its ceiling painted by Michelangelo from 1508 to 1512 and one of the most renowned artworks of the High Renaissance period.
Continue to St. Peter's Basilica, built on the site where Peter the Apostle, thought to be the first pope, was crucified and buried. Until recently the largest church ever built, St. Peter's still remains one of the most
venerated sites in Christendom. The Vatican is the global capital of Catholicism and is Europe's only state to be governed by an absolute monarch, the Pope. It is also the world's smallest sovereign state. The balance of the day is at leisure.
