Cruise the length of the Great Glen on 'Scottish Highlander,' through lochs and down the scenic Caledonian Canal. This is inland cruising at its finest, with ancient castles and heather-clad hillsides along the way. Pass stunning highland countryside and visit battlegrounds of the Jacobite Rebellion; then stop at Glen Nevis distillery, where you learn whisky-making secrets and enjoy a dram or two.
Meet in Inverness for
transfer to ‘Scottish Highlander,’ moored
at Muirtown. After a champagne
welcome, cruise along the picturesque,
heather-lined canal.
Day 2: MONDAY
Visit 14th-century Cawdor
Castle with its beautifully landscaped
gardens and superb collection of
tapestries, paintings and furniture.
Continue to Culloden Moor, the site
of the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie
in 1746. Then cruise to Fort Augustus,
passing the shores of Loch Ness with
its fabled “monster,” to moor near Fort
Augustus Abbey.
Day 3: TUESDAY
Cruise up the staircase of
five locks through the village of Fort
Augustus. After lunch, visit Urquhart
Castle, a ruined stronghold strategically
positioned on a rocky peninsula on
the banks of Loch Ness. Dine this
evening at a local restaurant.
Day 4: WEDNESDAY
After a morning cruise
to Cullochy Locks via Kytra, drive
through Glenmoriston and highland
countryside to romantic Eilean Donan
Castle, the idyllic setting for the 1986
film Highlander.
Day 5: THURSDAY
Leave Cullochy Locks
for a morning cruise via two locks at
Laggan through Lochs Oich and Lochy
to Gairlochy. At Spean Bridge, visit the
World War II Commando Memorial
overlooking the town and shop for
traditional knitwear and tweeds at the
Woollen Mill. Then take the gondola
ride to the summit of Aonach Mòr in the
Ben Nevis range.
Day 6: FRIDAY
Visit the evocative battlefields
of Glencoe, setting for the third
Harry Potter film. Return to ‘Scottish
Highlander’ by way of the Ben Nevis
distillery for insight into the secrets of
whisky making (including a wee dram or
two). Your final cruise to Banavie is via
Neptune’s Staircase, a spectacular flight
of eight locks. Later, gather for a farewell
dinner on board your barge.
Day 7: SATURDAY
After breakfast, transfer to
Inverness where your journey ends.
