ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Following an overnight flight, arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha. Continue on to your hotel located on a picturesque working coffee plantation.

Day 2: Arusha/Tarangire National Park
This morning, travel by road to Tarangire National Park, home to herds of as many as 400 elephants, as well as a large variety of plains game. Continue to your exclusive mobile tented campsite, which evokes the romance of a bygone era. Enjoy candlelit meals, spend time lounging before a roaring fire and sip cocktails while watching in quiet reflection as nature’s wonders unveil. Birders feel right at home: the endemic rufous-tailed weaver, as well as the vibrantly colored lilac-breasted roller, are in residence. A&K hosts a special welcome dinner this evening.

Day 3: Tarangire National Park
Begin the day with a cup of hot coffee or tea, brought by your private tent attendant. After a bush breakfast prepared by your staff, morning and afternoon game drives intersect Tarangire’s varied landscapes. Look for eland, wildebeests and zebras, as well as many elephants.

Day 4: Tarangire/Lake Manyara National Park
One of a chain of lakes in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara is nestled at the foot of a spectacular 2,000-foot escarpment. En route, stop to stroll a Maasai handcrafts market. After settling in at your lodge, explore the trails on foot with a resident naturalist, look out from an observation post or take a dip in the pool. This afternoon, embark on a game drive through bird-populated foliage and visit this section of the Great Rift Valley.

Day 5: Lake Manyara/Ngorongoro Crater
Travel overland to Gibb’s Farm for a freshly prepared lunch. Proceed to A&K’s luxury, mobile tented camp at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. A fascinating microcosm of East African wildlife lives within the crater’s 100-square-mile floor.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Drive through Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most unusual wildlife areas and the largest unbroken ancient caldera in the world. You are likely to see many species of wildlife, including lions, elephants, hyenas, wildebeests and gazelles. Even the rare and endangered black rhinoceros can be found here. Relax over an A&K-hosted gourmet hot barbecue at a private, shaded picnic site. Visit a nearby Maasai village and meet with a village elder to gain insight into the culture and traditions of the Maasai, pastoralists who have coexisted with wildlife for centuries. This evening, the colorfully attired Maasai put on a private, traditional dance performance.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater/Serengeti National Park
Continue your drive into the arid, spectacular country of Serengeti National Park. Time permitting, embark on a game drive and watch for lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, giraffes and topi.

Days 8-9: Serengeti National Park
Transfer to your exclusive A&K tented camp, where you spend two more days on safari in the Serengeti, watching vast herds at one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. In addition to the “Big Five,” the lesser-known “Little Five” — ant lions, rhino beetles, leopard tortoises, buffalo weavers and elephant shrew — may be seen peeking from behind stones or near-hidden in acacia branches. At the end of one day, linger over sundowner cocktails overlooking the Serengeti plains. While you are here, consider taking an optional hot air balloon ride for a different game-viewing experience. On your final evening, join fellow travellers for a farewell dinner.

Day 10: Serengeti/Arusha/Depart
Leave the vastness of the plains and fly to Arusha. Spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure; a dayroom is provided for your convenience.
