DAY 1, Saturday - Depart for Peru

DAY 2, Sunday - Arrive in Cuzco
Early this morning, arrive in Lima, Peru and board your connecting flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in Cuzco. Balance of the day is at leisure. In the afternoon join the optional Cuzco City Tour. Visit the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cuzco which contains over 400 paintings from the Cusqueña School in addition to an impressive collection of colonial art. Continue on to visit the Temple of the Sun, whose walls and floors were allegedly once covered by sheets of solid gold. This temple was once the most important religious site of the Incas. DAY 3, Monday - Pisac & Ollantaytambo
This morning, depart for the Sacred Valley. Along the way, stop at Pisac Village and explore the town and bargain with vendors on the cobblestone streets of the Pisac handicraft market. Continue on with a visit to the impressive Inca village of Ollantaytambo, the last stand of the Incas in their defense against the Spanish conquistadors. Marvel at the architecture of the Incas in this well preserved settlement, considered a living museum of 15th century life. DAY 4, Tuesday - Discover Machu Picchu
Early morning transfer to the Sacred Valley's Ollanta Station to board the Expedition Train [/peru-ecuador-travel/peru-rail.aspx] that travels through misty peaks to the astonishing ancient citadel of Machu Picchu*, the "Lost City of the Incas", designated by UNESCO as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu was virtually unknown to the western world until Hiram Bingham's re-discovery in 1911. Spend the morning viewing the unforgettable wonders of this 15th century retreat, abandoned nearly 100 years later with the arrival of the conquistadors. See the highlights of the site including the imposing Temple of the Sun, the House of the Priest, the Sacred Plaza and the intricately carved rock likely used as a sundial by the ancient Incas. The images of this significant archaeological site will be a long-lasting memory. DAY 5, Wednesday - Depart Peru
This morning, return to Cuzco. En route, stop in Chinchero. Here, enjoy a demonstration of the ancient Andean tradition of making textiles from naturally dyed handwoven alpaca wool. Remarkably, the source for the vibrant colors are dyes that come from plants, minerals, and insects. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Cuzco or, join the optional half day Ancient Cuzco Ruins tour. Explore numerous Inca ruins that all served unique purposes. Start with a visit to Saqsaywaman, an enormous Inca site that overlooks Cuzco and the Sacred Valley. Here, observe precision masonry of the massive stones that fit together tightly without mortar. Continue on to Kenko and navigate through the engraved passages and canals of this once active worship site. Afterward, proceed to Puca Pacara, "The Red Fortress", used by the Incas not only as a control station and lookout, but also to house weapons and provide military support. Continue on to Tambomachay and discover the many aqueducts, canals and also waterfalls used by the Incas as an indulgent spa.
