Cruise Port Guide

King George River, Western Australia, Australia

A remote Kimberley gorge where twin waterfalls plunge more than 80 meters over ancient sandstone cliffs

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

The King George River winds through one of the Kimberley's most remote and dramatic landscapes, its rust-red sandstone walls rising sheer from tidal waters. Reachable only by boat or air, the gorge narrows toward King George Falls, where twin cascades drop more than 80 meters into the river below, framed by streaked cliff faces and pockets of mangrove forest along the banks.

Small craft carry travelers close to the base of the falls, where the scale of the cliffs and the force of falling water are best appreciated. The surrounding gorge system supports birdlife and hardy vegetation adapted to the region's extremes, offering a glimpse of the Kimberley's ancient geology largely untouched by development. This is a landing best suited to those drawn to wilderness and open water rather than shore facilities, as none exist here.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in King George River.

Tender to the Falls' Base

Small boats push in close to the twin cascades, where mist and noise reveal the true scale of the 80-meter drop. Bring a waterproof layer and camera, as spray reaches the bow.

Scenic Flight Over the Gorge

A helicopter or floatplane excursion reveals the full sweep of the river's switchbacks and sandstone escarpments from above, a perspective impossible to grasp from the water. Book ahead, as seats are limited.

Spot Crocodiles and Cliff Birdlife

Scan the mangrove fringes and tidal shallows for saltwater crocodiles basking on mudbanks, while ospreys and fruit bats work the cliff ledges overhead.
