Tracy Arm / Endicott Arm

Twin glacial fjords south of Juneau reveal towering granite cliffs, calving glaciers, and waters strewn with drifting ice

About the Port

South of Juneau, Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm cut deep into the Coast Mountains, their narrow channels framed by granite walls rising thousands of feet above the water. Waterfalls thread down sheer rock faces, and icebergs calved from tidewater glaciers drift past in shades of blue and white. Naturalist John Muir explored this region in 1879, and much of it remains as he described it, sculpted by sublime cliffs and fringed with trees and flowering brush.

The surrounding wilderness forms part of the largest intact coastal temperate rain forest in the country, its old-growth stands taking root as the last Ice Age retreated. Wildlife including seals hauled out on ice floes and mountain goats on distant slopes may be spotted along the way. This stretch is typically viewed entirely from shipboard decks, making it a rare wilderness experience that requires no landing at all.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Tracy Arm / Endicott Arm.

Claim a Deck-Side Vantage Point

Arrive early on an outer deck to secure a spot along the rail; the fjord narrows to about a mile wide, so cliffs, waterfalls, and drifting ice are best seen from open-air viewing rather than through a window.

Watch for Calving at the Glacier Face

Keep eyes and cameras trained on the tidewater glacier at the fjord's end, where chunks of ice periodically thunder into the water, sending smaller icebergs adrift down the channel.

Scan the Cliffs for Wildlife

Bring binoculars to pick out mountain goats on distant crags and seals hauled out on ice floes; the quiet approach through the narrow channel offers some of the trip's best wildlife-spotting odds.
