About Celebrity Xpedition

“Celebrity's exceptional level of personal service, award-winning cuisine, world-famous amenities and accommodations that are the most spacious at sea, not only ensure an unforgettable cruise experience, but forge a lasting relationship between ourselves and our guests. It's no surprise that Celebrity guests and the travel press, such as Condé Nast Traveler, consistently rate Celebrity Cruises as one of the world's finest cruise lines. Experience for yourself what sets Celebrity apart.” — Celebrity Xpedition

Celebrity's Galapagos sailings are a world apart from its ocean fleet: intimate, all-inclusive expedition voyages through one of the most protected ecosystems on Earth. The experience centers on Celebrity Flora, a 100-guest mega yacht the line describes as the first all-suites vessel designed and built exclusively for the Galapagos Islands, joined by the 48-guest Celebrity Xpedition. Every stateroom on Flora is a suite with a Personal Suite Attendant, and menus draw on locally sourced ingredients.

These are true expedition fares. Twice-daily shore excursions are led by certified naturalist guides from the Galapagos National Park, with snorkeling gear, wetsuits, binoculars, and walking sticks all provided. Meals, drinks including select wines and spirits, unlimited Wi-Fi, gratuities, park fees, and daily briefings are included as well, so days revolve around wildlife rather than logistics.

Sustainability is built into the ship itself: Flora uses dynamic positioning to hold station without dropping anchor and disturbing the seabed, solar panels to supplement electricity, and hull coatings that reduce fuel use. Guests have contributed $1.5 million to the Galapagos Fund and helped plant 50,000 trees. Choose a 7-night island loop, a 10- or 11-night package adding Quito, or a 16-night journey that continues to Machu Picchu and Peru's Sacred Valley.

New & notable: Celebrity Flora, the newest addition to the line's Galapagos fleet, is the first ship designed and built especially for the islands and the region's first resort at sea to earn a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating.

Celebrity Xpedition Questions, Answered

What is Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises is a premium ocean cruise line founded in 1989, part of Royal Caribbean Group. They position squarely between mainstream lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival and ultra-luxury lines like Silversea and Seabourn — targeting sophisticated travelers who want contemporary design, elevated dining, and a refined atmosphere without the stuffiness of traditional luxury cruising. Their flagship Edge Series ships — Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond, Ascent, and the newest addition, Celebrity Xcel (2025) — are widely regarded as some of the most architecturally innovative vessels in the industry. Celebrity’s brand positioning is Modern Luxury, and they deliver on it consistently.

How does Celebrity compare to Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Princess?

Each line occupies a distinct niche:

  • Celebrity vs. Royal Caribbean: Both are owned by Royal Caribbean Group, but Celebrity is considerably more upscale — less emphasis on thrill attractions, more focus on gastronomy, art, spa, and design. Celebrity attracts a slightly older, more design-conscious crowd.
  • Celebrity vs. Holland America: Celebrity is more contemporary and forward-looking; Holland America leans into heritage, tradition, and a more mature demographic. Celebrity’s Edge Series ships are dramatically more modern than HAL’s fleet.
  • Celebrity vs. Princess: Princess offers more family-friendly programming and a broader range of price points. Celebrity skews more adult-focused with a stronger culinary and spa identity.
Celebrity is often described as the ideal first step into premium cruising for travelers graduating from mainstream lines — and a genuine alternative to ultra-luxury for those who don’t want to pay Seabourn or Silversea prices.
Is Celebrity Cruises worth the price?

Celebrity consistently earns top marks in the premium segment for ship design, culinary quality, and onboard service. The Edge Series ships are celebrated for their architectural ambition — the Magic Carpet, infinite veranda staterooms, Eden restaurant — and genuinely deliver an experience that rivals luxury lines at a lower price point. When you factor in the Always Included package (drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi), the value equation improves significantly compared to lines that charge for everything separately.

For travelers comparing Celebrity to ultra-luxury options like Silversea or Regent, Celebrity often wins on contemporary style and itinerary breadth, while the luxury lines edge ahead on service intimacy and full all-inclusive depth.
When was Celebrity Cruises founded and who owns it?

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1989 by the Chandris Group and acquired by Royal Caribbean Group in 1997. It operates as an independent premium brand within the Royal Caribbean family alongside Royal Caribbean International and Silversea Cruises. Celebrity’s fleet has grown to 16 ships sailing globally, with the Edge Series — now five ships strong with the addition of Celebrity Xcel in 2025 — representing the latest generation of the brand’s evolution toward premium-luxury positioning.

Where does Celebrity sail?

Celebrity operates globally across nearly every major sailing region:

  • Caribbean — Eastern, Western, and Southern itineraries year-round
  • Alaska — Inside Passage, Gulf of Alaska, and Glacier Bay (May–September)
  • Europe — Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Baltic, and British Isles
  • Bermuda — Short sailings from the US East Coast
  • South America — Including Antarctica expedition programs
  • Australia & New Zealand — Seasonal deployments
  • Asia — Japan, Southeast Asia, and India sailings
  • Galápagos Islands — Aboard the purpose-built Celebrity Flora and Celebrity Xploration

The Galápagos program is particularly distinctive — Celebrity is one of the very few lines permitted to operate within the national park’s restricted ecosystem.
