Alphonse Atoll, Seychelles

A remote coral atoll in the outer Seychelles prized for pristine reefs, flats fishing, and untouched solitude

About the Port

Alphonse Atoll lies far south of the Seychelles' granitic islands, a remote coral formation ringed by turquoise lagoon and reef flats. Part of the Alphonse Group, it remains sparsely visited and largely undeveloped, which has helped preserve its marine environment and birdlife. The surrounding waters are known among anglers for saltwater fly-fishing on the flats and among divers and snorkelers for clear visibility and healthy coral.

Arrival is by tender, with the atoll's interior lagoon and shoreline best explored by small boat rather than on foot. Days here favor unhurried nature pursuits: swimming and snorkeling directly from anchor, scanning the shallows for reef fish and rays, or watching seabirds that nest along the sand cays. With no town or port infrastructure, the appeal rests entirely in its isolation and the surrounding ecosystem, a quiet counterpoint to the busier islands elsewhere in the archipelago.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Alphonse Atoll.

Snorkel the Lagoon Flats

Slip in directly from the tender to drift over healthy coral and reef fish in exceptionally clear water. No infrastructure means gear and a short boat ride out are essential, so confirm timing with the crew early.

Fly-Fish the Flats

The shallow sand flats ringing the atoll are prized among saltwater fly anglers for bonefish and other prized species. Arrange a small-boat outing in advance, as this is a signature draw for visiting anglers.

Scan the Sand Cays for Seabirds

Circle the atoll's nesting cays by tender to spot terns, boobies, and other seabird colonies undisturbed by development. Bring binoculars, as birds are best viewed from the water rather than on foot.
