Amboseli

Elephant country at the foot of Kilimanjaro, where big-tusked herds cross dusty plains beneath Africa's highest peak

Micato Safaris & India Journeys

About Amboseli

Amboseli National Park sits in southern Kenya against the border with Tanzania, and its identity is inseparable from the mountain that towers over it: Mount Kilimanjaro, whose snow-capped summit floats above the clouds on clear mornings and gives the park the most famous backdrop in African photography. The land itself is a mosaic of dry lake bed, open savannah, and spring-fed marshes where underground water from Kilimanjaro's slopes rises to the surface and keeps the wildlife close.

Amboseli is best known for its elephants — large, well-studied herds that include some of East Africa's last great tuskers — and for the reliable way game concentrates around its wetlands. Beyond the elephants, travelers typically see buffalo, hippo, wildebeest, zebra, and a strong cast of birdlife, while the surrounding rangelands remain home to Maasai communities whose cattle culture has shaped this landscape for centuries.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Amboseli.

Catch Kilimanjaro at dawn

The mountain usually hides in cloud by mid-morning, so the classic Amboseli picture — elephants crossing in front of the summit — is an early-morning reward. Sunrise game drives here are worth the alarm clock.

Watch the marsh elephants

Amboseli's spring-fed marshes draw elephant families in to drink and wallow through the heat of the day, often wading chest-deep. It's some of the most relaxed, close-range elephant viewing in Africa.

Climb Observation Hill

One of the few places in the park where you can step out of the vehicle, this small rise gives a sweeping view over the wetlands, the dry lake bed, and the game scattered across the plains below.
