About the Port
Arles sits near the Mediterranean coast in Provence, a city whose origins trace back over two thousand years to Roman founding under Julius Caesar. It holds one of the largest collections of Roman ruins outside Rome itself, including a well-preserved amphitheater and ancient theater that still anchor the compact old town. Centuries of history layer easily here, from Roman administrative buildings to medieval streets that wind through sunlit squares.
In the late 1880s, Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles and found deep inspiration in its light and surrounding landscapes, producing some of his most celebrated paintings during his stay. Traces of that era linger in the cafés and riverside views that still echo his canvases.
