Arles

A sun-washed Provençal city where ancient Roman monuments and Van Gogh's landscapes meet along the Rhône

About the Port

Arles sits near the Mediterranean coast in Provence, a city whose origins trace back over two thousand years to Roman founding under Julius Caesar. It holds one of the largest collections of Roman ruins outside Rome itself, including a well-preserved amphitheater and ancient theater that still anchor the compact old town. Centuries of history layer easily here, from Roman administrative buildings to medieval streets that wind through sunlit squares.

In the late 1880s, Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles and found deep inspiration in its light and surrounding landscapes, producing some of his most celebrated paintings during his stay. Traces of that era linger in the cafés and riverside views that still echo his canvases. The historic center is easily explored on foot, with Roman landmarks, small museums, and Provençal markets all within a short walk of one another, making Arles a rewarding stop for those drawn to both antiquity and art.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Arles.

Explore the Roman Amphitheater

Climb into the two-tiered arena, still used for events today, and walk the stone corridors gladiators once passed through. It anchors the old town and takes about 30-45 minutes to explore fully.

Follow the Van Gogh Trail

Seek out the spots where the artist set up his easel, including the yellow café on Place du Forum immortalized in Café Terrace at Night. Small placards around town mark the exact viewpoints of his canvases.

Wander the Ancient Theatre and Old Town

Stroll from the ruins of the Roman theatre through medieval lanes to Place de la République, browsing Provençal markets and small museums along the way. Everything sits within easy walking distance in the compact center.
