Cruise Port Guide

Beagle Channel

A storied strait at the tip of South America, framed by Andean peaks and threaded with glaciers

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

The Beagle Channel separates the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego from smaller islands at the very end of South America, its waters named for the survey ship that once carried Charles Darwin on his voyage of discovery. Ships glide between steep, snow-capped Andean slopes, passing weathered lighthouses and outcrops favored by cormorants and sea lions. The channel's sheltered, glassy waters make it a favored passage for vessels bound toward Cape Horn or Antarctica.

Farther along, the narrower Cockburn Channel offers close views of tidewater glaciers spilling from the Darwin Range, their blue ice calving quietly into the sea. There is no port of call here, only continuous scenery best enjoyed from open decks or observation lounges, with binoculars ready for circling albatrosses and the occasional pod of dolphins riding the bow wave. Layered clothing is worth having on hand, since conditions can shift quickly in this far southern latitude.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Beagle Channel.

Claim an Open-Deck Vantage Point

Head outside early as the ship threads between Tierra del Fuego and its outlying islands; the sheltered water stays calm enough for steady photos of Andean peaks and lighthouse-topped islets.

Watch for Cormorants and Sea Lions

Rocky outcrops along the channel host noisy colonies of cormorants and sea lions, while albatrosses and dolphins sometimes trail the bow—keep binoculars within reach.

Scan Cockburn Channel for Calving Glaciers

Further along, tidewater glaciers from the Darwin Range meet the sea in this narrower passage; watch quietly from a lounge window or rail for chunks of blue ice breaking off.
