About the Port
The Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the river between Koblenz and Bingen, unfolds as a corridor of steep vineyards, half-timbered villages, and dozens of medieval castles perched on rocky outcrops. These strongholds once guarded river tolls and trade routes, and many still stand watch over the water much as they did centuries ago, their towers and battlements visible from the passing shoreline. The surrounding hillsides remain planted with Riesling vines that have supported local winemaking for generations.
Small towns along the banks, including Bacharach, Rüdesheim, and St. Goar, offer easy walking access to riverside promenades, old market squares, and centuries-old churches. Many of these villages sit directly on the water, allowing travelers to step ashore and explore without lengthy transfers. The gorge rewards unhurried observation, whether from a riverside terrace or a walking path leading up toward one of the ruined keeps overlooking the valley below.
