About the Port
Channel Islands National Park encompasses five islands off the Southern California coast, known for dramatic sea cliffs, kelp forests, and species found nowhere else on Earth, including the island fox. The park's isolation has kept its landscapes close to their natural state, offering visitors a glimpse of what the California coastline looked like before widespread settlement. Tide pools, sea caves, and grassy bluffs make the islands a haven for hikers, kayakers, and wildlife watchers alike.
Access is only by boat, and there are no bridges or regular ferries connecting the islands to the mainland, which helps preserve their untouched character. Visitors typically arrive at Santa Cruz or Anacapa Island, where landing points provide access to trails and sheltered coves. The lack of large-scale infrastructure means facilities are minimal, so travelers should come prepared for a rugged, nature-focused experience rather than a developed port town.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Channel Islands National Park.
Kayak the Sea Caves
Paddle into Santa Cruz Island's Painted Cave and other sea caverns carved into towering cliffs, among the largest and deepest in the world. Guided tours typically launch from Scorpion Anchorage and last two to three hours, so book ahead if landing there.
Hike to Inspiration Point
On Anacapa Island, climb from the landing cove up a short, steep trail past nesting seabirds to sweeping views of the arched Anacapa islet and open Pacific. The round trip takes under two hours, making it ideal for a brief stop ashore.
Spot the Island Fox
Wander the grassy bluffs of Santa Cruz Island in search of the diminutive island fox, a subspecies found nowhere else, most easily seen near trails and campgrounds in early morning or late afternoon light.
