About Chianti
Chianti is the Tuscany of the imagination: a rumpled sea of vine-striped hills between Florence and Siena, stitched with cypress avenues, olive groves, honey-stone villages, and castles that have been making wine since the Middle Ages. The Chianti Classico heartland — marked by its Black Rooster seal — produces Sangiovese-based reds that rank with Italy's finest, best tasted in the cellars where they're born.
This is slow-travel country, made for two-wheeled and on-foot exploring: the SR222 Chiantigiana road curls from wine town to wine town, Greve's arcaded market square invites a long lunch, hilltop Volpaia and Castellina hide medieval lanes, and every ridge seems to end at a tasting room with a view. Between pours there are frescoed parish churches, butcher shops of operatic fame, and sunsets that explain five centuries of landscape painting.
