About Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre are five villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore — stacked in improbable pastel towers where the Ligurian mountains plunge into the sea. For a thousand years they were reachable only by boat or mule track, and their terraced vineyards, tiny harbors, and car-free lanes still feel wonderfully out of time; today a five-minute train ride or a clifftop footpath links one to the next.
This is Italy's most celebrated coastal walking: the national-park trails climb through dry-stone vineyard terraces and olive groves, cross streams, and round every headland to a new village posing above its harbor. Reward each stage as the locals do — with focaccia and pesto (both born in Liguria), a paper cone of fried anchovies, or a glass of the Sciacchetrà wine those heroic terraces produce.

Hike village to village
The Sentiero Azzurro between Monterosso and Vernazza is the classic stage — vineyard terraces, sea cliffs, and that famous first view down onto Vernazza's harbor tower.
See Manarola at dusk
From the point beyond the harbor, Manarola's tower of pastel houses lights up above the swimming cove — the single most photographed view on the Riviera, and deservedly so.
Eat Liguria's greatest hits
Pesto was invented here; so was focaccia. Add just-caught anchovies and a glass of local white on a harbor wall, and lunch becomes the day's main event.
