About the Port
The Dampier Archipelago comprises more than 40 rugged islands off the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, near the town of Karratha. Red rock formations rise above clear, turquoise waters home to dolphins, turtles, and abundant reef fish, while the nearby Burrup Peninsula, known to its traditional owners as Murujuga, holds one of the largest concentrations of Aboriginal petroglyphs on Earth, some estimated to be tens of thousands of years old.
Beyond its natural beauty, the region offers a striking contrast between ancient landscape and modern industry, with iron ore ports and gas facilities visible along the mainland shore. Excursions typically explore the islands by small boat, offering access to secluded beaches and rock art sites unreachable on foot. Karratha serves as the main gateway, with limited infrastructure elsewhere, making guided access the practical way to experience this remote and largely untouched corner of Australia.

How our planners would spend a day in Dampier Archipelago.
View the Murujuga Petroglyphs
See one of the world's densest concentrations of ancient Aboriginal rock art on the Burrup Peninsula, with engravings depicting extinct megafauna and marine life. Best visited with a guide who can explain the site's cultural significance.
Snorkel the Island Reefs
Slip into clear turquoise water around the archipelago's outer islands to spot turtles, reef fish, and coral gardens largely untouched by visitors. Access is by small boat only, so build in time for the transfer.
Cruise the Red Rock Coastline
Wind by boat past dramatic iron-red islands and hidden beaches, watching for dolphins along the way. A small-boat excursion is the only practical way to reach these secluded coves.
