Elephant Island

A remote, glacier-clad outpost famed as the desolate refuge of Shackleton's stranded crew

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Elephant Island rises from the Southern Ocean at the edge of the South Shetland Islands, its jagged peaks and tidewater glaciers rarely touched by visitors. The island earned its place in exploration history in 1916, when members of Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition sheltered on its narrow, storm-battered shore at Point Wild for months awaiting rescue. Today it remains uninhabited and largely inaccessible, valued less for facilities than for the raw scale of its scenery and the weight of its history.

Landing here is rare and dependent on ice and weather, so most encounters happen from the water, cruising past sheer cliffs, chinstrap penguin colonies, and seabird-wheeled skies. Travelers come for the sense of remoteness and the chance to see, firsthand, a place synonymous with endurance and survival at the far reaches of the polar world.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Elephant Island.

Scan for the Point Wild Bust

Look for the small monument marking where Shackleton's crew survived over four months; it's usually spotted by zodiac or from deck rather than on foot, weather permitting.

Cruise Beneath the Cliffs

Take a zodiac along the island's sheer, glacier-carved coastline for close views of tidewater ice and rock faces rarely seen this near, weather and ice conditions allowing.

Watch the Chinstrap Colonies

Scan the slopes and shoreline for dense chinstrap penguin rookeries, among the largest in the region, best observed from the water with binoculars or a zoom lens.
