About the Port
Esperanza sits along the southern coast of Vieques, a small island off Puerto Rico's eastern shore reached by ferry or small aircraft. Its short waterfront boulevard, known as the Malecón, is lined with open-air restaurants, guesthouses, and bars where island life moves at an unhurried pace. Nearby beaches, including the protected Sun Bay just east of town, offer calm water and soft sand within easy reach of the pier.
The town also serves as the gateway to Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent lagoon renowned for its concentration of glowing microorganisms, best experienced on a clear, moonless night. Much of Vieques remains undeveloped, a legacy of its decades as a naval training ground, leaving long stretches of coastline and wildlife refuge land largely untouched. Travelers find Esperanza an easy, low-key introduction to the island's slower rhythm.

Kayak Mosquito Bay at Night
Paddle a guided tour across the bioluminescent lagoon on a moonless evening, when every stroke of the water erupts in blue-green light. Book ahead, as tours are capped and depart from Esperanza after dark.

This protected crescent beach just east of town offers calm, shallow water and soft sand backed by palms, ideal for a swim or a slow afternoon before heading back to the pier.
Explore the Wildlife Refuge
Much of Vieques' former naval land is now a national wildlife refuge with quiet trails and remote beaches like Playa Caracas, reachable by taxi or rented Jeep for those with extra time.
