Fort William

At the foot of Ben Nevis, this Highland town opens onto lochs, glens, and some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery.

About the Port

Fort William sits on the shores of Loch Linnhe in the Scottish Highlands, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles. The town has long served as a gateway to the surrounding glens and lochs, its history shaped by clan conflicts, military garrisons, and the arrival of the railway in the nineteenth century. Today it remains a natural base for exploring the Great Glen, a geological fault line stretching northeast toward Loch Ness.

Beyond the town, the landscape opens into some of Scotland's most storied scenery, including nearby Glen Coe, with its steep slopes and somber history, and the Glenfinnan viaduct, famed for its railway views. Fort William's compact center, with shops and cafés along the High Street, lies within easy walking distance of the waterfront, making it a convenient starting point for day trips into the Highlands.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Fort William.

Ride the Jacobite Steam Train

The vintage steam service crosses the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct, famed from film, on its route toward Mallaig. Book well ahead, as seats sell out and the round trip takes most of a day.

Explore Glen Coe

A short drive south leads into this dramatic glen of steep peaks and a somber clan history. Short walks off the main road offer sweeping views without technical hiking.

Ride the Nevis Range Gondola

Scotland's only mountain gondola climbs the slopes near Ben Nevis for panoramic Highland views in about 15 minutes, with cafés and trails at the top for those short on time.
