About the Port
Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait form a network of waterways threading through the Alexander Archipelago in Southeast Alaska, framed by steep, forested islands and mountains that rise abruptly from the Pacific. The region is widely regarded as one of the richest feeding grounds for humpback whales in Alaska, drawing pods that return each year to bubble-net feed in the nutrient-rich waters. Harbor seals, sea lions, and orcas also frequent the sound, making it a favored stretch for wildlife viewing.
There is no port of call here, as ships move slowly through the passage rather than dock, giving passengers time on open decks to watch for spouts and breaching whales against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers. The scenery shifts constantly with the light and tide, offering a quiet, undeveloped counterpoint to Alaska's busier ports.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait.
Watch for Bubble-Net Feeding
Post up on deck with binoculars for humpbacks working cooperatively to corral herring—one of the few places this rare behavior is regularly sighted. Early morning and calm water offer the best odds of a full breach or lunge feed.
Scan for Orcas and Sea Lions
Beyond humpbacks, transient orca pods and haul-outs of Steller sea lions frequent these channels. Bring layered clothing and stay flexible with deck time, since sightings can happen suddenly on either side of the ship.
Take in the Glacier-Carved Scenery
Snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers frame the water on all sides, with light and tide constantly reshaping the view. Keep a camera ready near the bow or open promenade for the passage's quieter, undeveloped landscapes.
