Gallipoli

A honey-stone old town on its own island, ringed by turquoise water on the heel of Italy's Salento coast

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Gallipoli sits on the Salento Peninsula in Puglia, its historic center occupying a small island joined to the mainland by a bridge dating to the 16th century. The name, derived from Greek, means "beautiful city," and the sun-bleached stone facades, narrow lanes, and a castle overlooking the harbor bear that out. Colorful fishing boats work the bay below walls that drop straight into clear, turquoise water, a scene long favored by painters and photographers.

The old town is compact and walkable directly from the waterfront, making it an easy introduction to Salento's slower rhythms. Visitors wander past a baroque cathedral, fish markets, and small piazzas before settling in for fresh seafood at a harborside table. Beyond the island center, the surrounding coastline offers sandy beaches and rocky coves, giving travelers a good sense of Puglia's varied shoreline within a short outing.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Gallipoli.

Explore Castello Angioino

This Angevin castle guards the harbor entrance and offers ramparts with sweeping views over the fishing boats and turquoise bay below. Just steps from the bridge into the old town, it's an easy stop before wandering further.

Visit the Baroque Cathedral

Dedicated to Sant'Agata, this 17th-century cathedral anchors the old town with an ornate facade and richly decorated interior. It sits along the main walking route through the historic center, taking only a few minutes to see.

Stroll the Sea Walls

Walk the ramparts encircling the island center, where pastel facades meet water dropping straight into clear turquoise shallows. Sunset brings out the best light for photos over the harbor and fishing fleet.
