About the Port
Formed when the Chagres River was dammed to create the Panama Canal, Gatun Lake was, at the time of its construction in the early twentieth century, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. It remains central to the canal's operation, feeding the system of locks that raise and lower ships between the Atlantic and Pacific. Forested hills rise from its shores, and the lake's scattered islands, remnants of the land submerged when the valley was flooded, shelter tropical wildlife within easy reach of the transiting waterway.
Visits here typically arrive by tender, with small-boat excursions offering the best access to the lake's quieter coves and wildlife-rich shorelines. The surrounding rainforest and canal infrastructure make it a memorable stop for anyone curious about the engineering feat that reshaped global shipping routes over a century ago.

How our planners would spend a day in Gatun Lake.
Take a Wildlife-Spotting Boat Tour
Small boats glide through the lake's forested islands and coves, where howler monkeys, sloths, and toucans are often spotted at close range. Excursions typically run one to two hours and depart directly from the tender landing.
Watch Ships Transit the Locks
Nearby Gatun Locks offer a rare vantage point to see massive vessels rise and fall between sea levels, a firsthand look at the engineering that reshaped global shipping. Viewing platforms are a short ride from the lake.
Visit Monkey Island
One of the lake's best-known islets, home to several primate species that often approach passing boats, a legacy of the forest that once covered this now-submerged valley. Best reached as part of a guided small-boat tour.
