About the Port
Guimarães, often called the Cradle City, is where the kingdom of Portugal traces its origins to a decisive battle in 1128. Its well-preserved medieval center, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, unfolds around the ruined Castle of Guimarães and a maze of granite streets, chapels, and noble facades that reflect centuries of layered history.
Downriver, Vila Nova de Gaia sits directly across the water from Porto, its hillside lined with the historic lodges where port wine has aged for generations. Travelers can wander the riverside promenade, sample the fortified wine at its source, and take in views of Porto's colorful old town across the Douro. Gaia's waterfront is easily explored on foot, making it a rewarding complement to a day spent among Guimarães' medieval treasures.
