About Hwange
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest and most famous reserve, spreading across the country's northwest on the edge of the Kalahari sands, within easy reach of Victoria Falls. Its landscapes shift from teak and mopane woodland to open savannah and fossil lake beds, and its scale is matched by its herds: Hwange is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, numbered in the tens of thousands.
Because the park has little natural surface water, life revolves around its waterholes — many pumped through the dry season — and game viewing here has a wonderful theatrical quality: settle in at a pan and the bush comes to you, elephant herds queuing behind buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and sable antelope. Hwange's predator viewing is equally strong, with large lion prides, leopard, cheetah, and one of southern Africa's important populations of African wild dog. It pairs naturally with Victoria Falls as the wild, game-rich half of a Zimbabwe journey.
