Isle of May

A windswept sanctuary in the Firth of Forth where seabirds and grey seals rule a rocky, lighthouse-topped isle

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

The Isle of May rises from the Firth of Forth as one of Scotland's most important nature reserves, a small island long valued for its seabird colonies and dramatic cliffs. Puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes crowd the ledges in great numbers through the breeding season, while grey seals haul out along the shoreline. A lighthouse dating to the early nineteenth century, among the earliest built in Scotland, still marks the island's high point and speaks to centuries of maritime history in these waters.

Landing is by small boat, since no pier accommodates larger vessels, and the island's paths are best explored on foot at an unhurried pace. Compact and treeless, the terrain rewards close attention to birdlife and coastal geology alike. The crossing itself, past open Forth waters, is part of the appeal, setting the stage for a quiet, wildlife-focused visit far removed from mainland bustle.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Isle of May.

Watch the Puffin Colonies

Tens of thousands of puffins burrow along the clifftops in summer, often close enough for easy viewing without binoculars. Stay on marked paths to protect nesting sites and give birds room.

Climb to the Stevenson Lighthouse

The early 19th-century light stands at the island's highest point, a short uphill walk from the landing spot with sweeping views over the Firth of Forth and surrounding cliffs.

Spot Grey Seals on the Rocks

Colonies haul out along the shoreline and rocky inlets, easily seen from the coastal path. Keep a respectful distance, especially if pups are present, and move quietly to avoid startling them.
