About the Port
Île Royale is the largest of the Îles du Salut, a small volcanic archipelago off the coast of French Guiana once used as a French penal colony from the mid-1800s into the twentieth century. Visitors wander shaded paths past stone cellblocks, a chapel, and administrative buildings reclaimed by tropical vegetation, with views across the channel toward the notorious Devil's Island. Peacocks and agoutis roam freely among the ruins, adding an unexpected liveliness to the historic setting.
Reaching the island requires a tender landing, as no deep-water pier exists, and paths climbing from the shore lead directly into the old colonial complex. The compact size makes it easy to explore on foot within a few hours, pairing history with coastal scenery. Nearby Kourou, home to a major spaceport, offers a striking contrast between past and present just across the water.
