Katakolon (Olympia)

A quiet Peloponnese harbor that opens the road to Olympia, sacred birthplace of the Olympic Games

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Katakolon is a small seaside town on the western coast of the Peloponnese, its compact waterfront lined with shops and cafes just steps from the pier. For centuries a modest fishing harbor, it now serves travelers primarily as the gateway to Olympia, the UNESCO World Heritage site where the ancient Olympic Games began.

Inland, the ruins of Olympia include the remains of the Temple of Zeus, the original stadium, and the training grounds once used by ancient athletes, along with a museum housing artifacts from the sanctuary. The archaeological site sits roughly a half-hour drive from the pier, making Katakolon a practical base for reaching one of Greece's most significant classical landmarks. Those who linger in town can enjoy a relaxed harborside stroll before or after the journey inland.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Katakolon .

Explore the Ruins of Olympia

Walk the sanctuary grounds past the Temple of Zeus and the original stadium track where the ancient Games began. The site is about a 30-minute drive from the pier; allow at least two hours to see it properly.

Visit the Archaeological Museum

Just steps from the ruins, this museum holds statuary, bronzes, and the famed Hermes of Praxiteles recovered from the sanctuary. A focused hour here adds context to the stones seen on-site.

Stroll the Katakolon Waterfront

Before boarding transport inland or upon return, wander the short harborfront lined with tavernas and shops selling olive oil and local wares. It's an easy, low-effort way to soak in a slice of Greek coastal life.
