About the Port
Kicker Rock, known locally as León Dormido, rises from the Pacific off the northern coast of San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos archipelago. The eroded remains of a volcanic cone, it splits into two dramatic vertical walls separated by a narrow channel that boats can navigate at low tide. Its jagged silhouette, said to resemble a sleeping lion from certain angles, makes it one of the archipelago's most recognizable natural landmarks.
Beneath the surface, the channel and surrounding waters draw snorkelers and divers eager to spot reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and colorful schools of tropical fish, alongside Galápagos sea lions that often swim alongside visitors. Frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies wheel overhead. Reaching Kicker Rock requires a boat excursion from San Cristóbal, as there is no dock or shore access at the rock itself, making it a highlight best experienced on the water rather than on foot.

How our planners would spend a day in Kicker Rock.
Snorkel the Channel
Slip into the narrow passage between the two rock walls to swim alongside reef sharks, sea turtles, and curious sea lions in deep, clear water; excursions run about a half-day from San Cristóbal.
Photograph the Sleeping Lion
Circle the formation by boat to capture its dramatic split silhouette from multiple angles, best caught in soft early or late light before winds pick up.
Scan the Skies for Boobies
Keep an eye upward as frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies wheel around the cliffs, an easy bonus sighting during the boat approach or channel swim.
