Kolkata

A city of grand colonial relics, sacred devotion, and living artistry along the banks of the Hooghly

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Once the capital of British India, Kolkata layers grand colonial architecture over centuries of Bengali culture and commerce. The Victoria Memorial's marble domes and the Howrah Bridge's cantilevered span anchor a city where heritage trams still rattle past crumbling mansions and bustling markets. The Mother House, founded by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, remains a place of quiet pilgrimage, while the flower market along the river hums with color and trade from early morning.

North of the center, the potters' quarter of Kumartuli continues traditions of clay sculpture passed through generations of artisans. Nearby Chandernagore, a former French colonial outpost founded in the seventeenth century, offers a calmer riverside counterpoint with its old promenade and a governor's residence turned museum. Much of central Kolkata's colonial core is best explored on foot from the riverfront, rewarding those willing to wander its arcaded streets.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Kolkata.

Ride a Heritage Tram

Board one of the city's vintage trams for a slow, rattling glimpse of colonial-era streets and neighborhoods rarely seen from a coach window. A short loop through the center takes under an hour and offers an easy break between walking stops.

Visit the Victoria Memorial

This white-marble monument to Empire, set in landscaped gardens, houses galleries of colonial-era paintings and artifacts. Allow at least an hour to see both the grounds and interior museum.

Wander Kumartuli's Potters' Lane

Watch artisans shape clay idols by hand in narrow workshop alleys north of the center, a craft passed down through generations. Best visited in the morning when studios are active; go with a local guide to navigate the lanes.
