About the Port
Set on a bend of the Nile between Edfu and Aswan, Kom Ombo is home to a striking double temple built during the Ptolemaic era and dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile deity, and Horus, depicted here as the falcon-headed Haroeris. Its symmetrical design features twin entrances, twin sanctuaries, and parallel halls of columns, a rare architectural arrangement in Egyptian temple building. Adjacent, the small Crocodile Museum displays mummified crocodiles recovered from nearby burial sites, offering insight into the animal cult once centered here.
The temple sits close to the riverbank, making it an easy walk from the mooring point for vessels calling at Kom Ombo. Sandstone columns, faded reliefs, and views over the Nile give the site a quiet, atmospheric character distinct from the grander temples nearby. Modest agricultural villages surround the area, and the setting remains a memorable stop on the classic Nile route between Luxor and Aswan.
