Komiza, Vis Island

A weathered Adriatic fishing town where stone lanes meet a harbor still ruled by the rhythms of the sea

About the Port

Komiza sits on the western shore of Vis Island, one of the most remote inhabited islands in the Adriatic, its pastel stone houses rising in tiers above a curved harbor once home to one of the largest fishing fleets on the Dalmatian coast. Narrow lanes lined with old fishermen's cottages lead up from the waterfront to a hilltop fortress and a Franciscan monastery, while the promenade itself remains lined with cafes and boats that still put out to sea each morning.

The town's isolation, reinforced by decades as a closed military zone during the twentieth century, has left its old center largely unspoiled and easy to explore on foot from the pier. Komiza also serves as a common gateway for excursions to the Blue Cave on nearby Bisevo Island, where sunlight transforms the water into a luminous blue. Its quiet coves and clear waters reward travelers happy to slow down and take in island life at its own pace.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Komiza.

Boat to the Blue Cave

Small boats depart Komiza's harbor for Bisevo Island, where sunlight refracts through an underwater opening to light the cave in electric blue. Mornings offer the best glow, and spots fill fast, so book a seat the day before.

Climb to Komiza Fortress

A short uphill walk from the waterfront leads to the 17th-century Kastel, a squat stone fortress housing a small fishing and seafaring museum. Its terrace gives a sweeping view over the harbor and rooftops below.

Wander the Old Fishermen's Quarter

Trace the narrow stone lanes behind the promenade, where centuries-old cottages once housed Komiza's fishing families. The walk ends near the Franciscan monastery, a quiet perch above town worth the extra few minutes of climbing.
