About the Port
Amboise sits along the Loire River in central France, its hilltop château overlooking the town and the water below. Once a favored residence of French kings, the Château d'Amboise retains Gothic and Renaissance features and is traditionally linked to the burial place of Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his last years nearby at the Clos Lucé estate, now a museum devoted to his life and work.
The surrounding countryside holds some of the Loire Valley's most celebrated architecture, including the Château de Chenonceau, built across the Cher River and long associated with Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de' Medici. Amboise's compact old town, with its stone houses and riverside promenade, is easily explored on foot, making it a convenient base for reaching the region's landmark châteaux and vineyards.
