Loreto, Mexico

A quiet mission town on the Sea of Cortez, framed by desert mountains and a marine park rich with island wildlife

About the Port

Set along Mexico's Sea of Cortez coastline in Baja California Sur, Loreto traces its roots to 1697, when Jesuit missionaries founded what became the first permanent settlement in the Californias. The stone Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto still anchors the compact historic center, its facade and adjoining museum offering a glimpse into the region's colonial and indigenous past. Low adobe buildings, a shaded plaza, and a seaside malecón give the town an unhurried, small-scale character quite different from Mexico's larger resort destinations.

Beyond the town, the Sierra de la Giganta mountains rise abruptly from the desert, while offshore waters form part of Loreto Bay National Marine Park, a protected area known for its islands and marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, and migratory whales. The historic mission and town square sit within easy walking distance of the waterfront, making the center readily accessible for those arriving by ship. Fishing, snorkeling, and island excursions extend the appeal for travelers drawn to the surrounding desert and sea landscape.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Loreto.

Boat to Isla Coronado

A short panga ride from the malecón reaches this uninhabited island in Loreto Bay National Marine Park, prized for sea lion colonies and clear snorkeling coves. Half-day trips can be arranged dockside.

Explore Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto

Step inside the stone church that anchors the historic center, then visit its adjoining museum to trace the founding of California's first mission settlement. Just steps from the waterfront.

Scan the Bay for Whales

Loreto's protected waters draw migratory whales, dolphins, and other marine life close to shore, best seen on a guided boat outing timed to seasonal sightings. Arrange through a local outfitter near the malecón.
