About the Port
Set along Mexico's Sea of Cortez coastline in Baja California Sur, Loreto traces its roots to 1697, when Jesuit missionaries founded what became the first permanent settlement in the Californias. The stone Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto still anchors the compact historic center, its facade and adjoining museum offering a glimpse into the region's colonial and indigenous past. Low adobe buildings, a shaded plaza, and a seaside malecón give the town an unhurried, small-scale character quite different from Mexico's larger resort destinations.
Beyond the town, the Sierra de la Giganta mountains rise abruptly from the desert, while offshore waters form part of Loreto Bay National Marine Park, a protected area known for its islands and marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, and migratory whales.
